Interview with Lydia Pintscher about Akademy 2008
Interview with Lydia Pintscher about Akademy 2008
From the 9th to the 15th of Augst the Akademy 2008, the KDE conference, took place in Sint-Katelijne-Waver, Belgium. On the FrOSCon we grabbed our chance to interview Lydia "Nightrose" Pintscher about it. Lydia is involved in the projects KDE, Amarok and Kubuntu.
Hi Lydia, please introduce yourself.
My name is Lydia Pintscher, I study computer science and I am the community manager and currently release manager for Amarok and I do promotion and community stuff for KDE.
What is "community stuff"?
I am member of the community working group. Its task is to solve problems around the KDE project and foster collaboration.
Can you briefly describe what Akademy is?
Akademy is the annual KDE developer conference. Developers congegrate and partially meet for the first time. They plan the next year and have discussions about important descisions that would be hard on IRC and mailing lists.
What did Akademy focus on this year?
The focus was on getting to know Nokia after it has taken over Trolltech. Another spotlight was on the adaptation of KDE for small devices, e.g. the N810. Nokia provided 150 of those to developers.
What was your personal impression of Akademy?
It was great fun and very productive and successful. For me it was most important to see many people again who work for KDE or to meet them for the first time. For example 7 Summer of Code / Season of KDE students came to Akademy. Akademy gave them the change to meet the people behind the KDE project and I think this will contribute to their continuing to work for Amarok after the Summer of Code concludes.
What impression of Nokia did you get?
They presented themselves as supporter of the KDE project without being obtrusive. They honestly seem to be interested in collaboration with KDE in several very different areas.
How does Nokia support KDE?
They are the main sponsor of Akademy now and there will be further collaboration in the future.
Are there differences to the time when Trolltech was still independent?
The amount of money available is different. Some people are sceptical about the reasons for Nokia. But Nokia was able to remove most of this scepsis.
You gave a talk at Akademy. About what?
Franz Keferböck and me did it together. We talked about how KDE can present itself more professionally and organized at conventions in the future and which infrastructure is necessary for this.
Were results of this applied to FrOSCon already?
We had made a checklist and applied it of course. But the time was too short to realize much.
Which precisely?
It should be easier for organizers. Websites are going to be built for that purpose. All in all it's mostly organizational things, not so much content, e.g. plans for new booth decoration and such things.
During Akademy the main meeting of the KDE e.V. organization took place. Can you tell me anything about it?
We talked about important stuff relating to KDE e.V. and KDE. E.g. a Code of Conduct was introduced and confirmed by the members. The Community Working Group was confirmed. The Fiduciary License Agreement was confirmed. http://ev.kde.org/announcements/2008-08-22-fsfe-welcomes-fla.php
Is it similar to the Kubuntu Code of Conduct?
We based ours on the Ubuntu CoC and adapted it to the needs of the KDE project. The result turned out to be quite different than the Ubuntu CoC. For example we introduced the "Be pragmatic" idea.
One point on the agenda was the future of the KDE development model - can you say something about that?
Dirk Müller and Sebastian Kügler gave a talk on Saturday about how the situation is now and what ideas they have for the future. On Wednesday there was a Bof session about it, but I couldn't take part sadly.
What are those thoughts for the future?
The talk didn't go into details, this was just some food for thought that was continued in the Bof session. Results will be showing during the next months.
Finally, the inevitable question: When will Amarok 2 come out? ;-)
It's planned for October, but we might have to adapt that. But of course we are trying hard to finish it by October.
Thank you lots for the interview, Lydia!
You are welcome.
